Puzzle Mindset – May 2023
This newsletter will be something like a puzzle. That’s because I don’t know the answer, or maybe even what the question is, or the challenge. There are pieces that seem to fit together, and so I will put them down here, and let’s just see where we get. To pick a good beginning, I typed “jigsaw puzzles” on YouTube and got a video on a 9000- piece puzzle. The young woman in the video spent six hours sorting the pieces into different piles based on color and pattern, and then began with the very center of the puzzle, which she knew from the image on the box. Jigsaw puzzlers like to work on patches of the whole, and these will dot a big table as the puzzler examines and slides the pieces around, looking for a fit. It’s said that every time you get a fit you enjoy a little dopamine hit, and these constant perks make the task addictive, to say nothing of the fact (theory?) that the brain loves problem-solving and the big mess in front of you is a problem until you start to knit it together. Then it becomes a relaxing adventure. Time melts away, puzzlers say; you decompress from the strain of the less solvable problems in your life, and if someone sits down and helps you, it’s a social session as well: you can chat while you focus, a nice mix of two kinds of brain gears.
